Introduction
Did you ever lose your valuable data? Well, I did! Making backups of
important files by hand was too much trouble. Other backup programs
I didn't like so I had to write one myself!
The program is called ckBackup, it is very easy to use
and yet has a lot of possibilities. It works on W95/98/00/NT/XP.
The Demo version is free and is fully functional for 30 days.
With ckBackup you can:
- backup your data with one click;
- simply restore your data;
- simply add files to the backup or remove them;
- duplicate your backup disk with one click;
- view the log file;
- use F1 to view the context sensitive help pages;
Registration is US$ 10 (or € 10). You will get a fully functional program.
You may forever download new versions.
How does it work
Before you can make backups with a single click you will have to
tell ckBackup what to backup. The place to do this is the
Manage Window:
First select the drive to write the backups to. Next select the
files to be backed up. These are the "Source files". At last copy
the selected files to the backup drive:
-
Prepare the right Backup Medium. Recommended is the use of re
writable CR-Roms in combination with a program as
InCD. (or: DLA, File CD, SimpliCD
ReWrite, InstantWrite, PacketCD, Drag-to-Disc DirectCD. These
program enable you to use a CR-rw as an hard disk.) Of course
you may also use a second hard disk, a Network drive or an
USB-memory stick.
Now put an empty CD-r/w into your burner.
-
Click the "Manage" Button to open the Manage Window.
-
Select the Backup Medium using the drop down list right below
in the Manage Window.
-
Select the right drive, with the Source Files. Select the
right directory and at last select the files to be backed up.
-
Click the " Add" Button to copy the selected files to the
Backup Medium. You may also right click the mouse button and
click the menu Item "Add"
-
Repeat the points 4 and 5 for all files, to be backed up.
-
Close the Manage Window by clicking the "Close" Button.
Now the preparation of the backup disk is ready.
The next time you want to make backups first click the "Newer"
Button. Now will be generated a list of all files created in
the backed up directories after the last backup date. Select the
right files and add them to the Backup.
Then click the "Make Backups" Button. The backups of all files
on the Backup Drive will be updated if needed.
Did you create new files in directories, that where not yet
backed up then you have to select them manually to add them to
the backup.
Description
ckBackup copies the files, not compressed, to the selected backup medium.
After starting ckBackup the main window is shown:
In the title bar is the name of the program and the version number.
At the right side of the buttons is the Message Window. Here the copied files
are shown. At the bottom is the Status Bar with information about the
backup medium.
To keep the interface simple there are only buttons to invoke the functions of
ckBackup.
These buttons are at the left side of the Main Window.
From top to bottom they are:
Newly Created
Before actually making backups you have to check if newer files have been
created. Click the button "Newly Created". ckBackup now searches yourdisks for
files that are created after the last backup. If files are found, they can
be easily added to the files already backed up.
Making Backups
Click this button to actually backup your data. Now all hard disks are
scanned for files, that are newer than the corresponding files on the backup
medium. The files that are found are copied to the backup medium.
In the main window all copied files are reported, complete with the
number of copied files, the number of Bytes copied, the total number of files
on the backup medium and the total number of Bytes used on the backup medium.
Manage
Click this button to view the Manage Window. At the left side, below
"Source" are the disks, directories and files, you want to backup.
At the right side, below "Backup" is the backup disk and the files,
already backed up.
At first start of ckBackup you will have to select the right backup
drive. Then, below "Source", select all files to be backed up. This done
the next backup is merely a matter of one click on the button
"Make Backups".
Restore
Click the "Restore" button to restore
all files, you ever backed
up to you hard disks.
Do you want to only restore one file, then use the Manage Window.
Duplicate
Clicking the button "Duplicate", starts the procedure of copying the
current backup disk to another (empty) disk.
It is wise to use at least two backup disks. Use for instance disk
"Backup-1" on the even days and use disk "Backup-2" on the odd days.
In case of an error you still have at least one backup disk of the
day before.
View Log File
Click the "View Log File" button to read the Log File. This file
contains all actions, as for instance, making backups, removing
files from backup or restoring files from the backup.
Update ckBackup
If an Internet Connection is available, ckBackup will check the web site
of ckBackup if a newer version has been released.
Is a newer version is available, then ckBackup suggests to download it.
After downloading the new version will be installed.
